Our Thriving Natural Farms in the East of Lanka

Mavadivembu: A Sandy Oasis of Abundance

Our Mavadivembu farm, established in 2023, is making strides on sandy soil. We’re cultivating a diverse range of crops including okra, long beans, brinjal, chili, leafy greens, coconut, banana, and pulses like green gram and cowpea. To nourish our plants naturally, we rely on cow dung manure and compost. While we’ve faced challenges like monsoon floods and pesky thieves, our commitment to natural farming remains steadfast.

Green Gram: A Quick-Yielding Crop

Green gram is a rapidly maturing crop, ready for harvest in approximately 75 days. Requiring minimal care in terms of fertilisation and pest control, it’s a low-maintenance option for farmers. With a potential yield of 400-500 kilograms per acre, green gram is a valuable addition to any crop rotation. To maximize our harvest, we’ve adopted the line sowing method, which has proven to be more efficient than seedling throwing. This approach not only boosts yield but also simplifies weed management.

Thikiliveddai: Nurturing Nature’s Bounty on Red Clay

Our Thikiliveddai farm, also initiated in 2023, is thriving on rich red clay soil. Beyond a variety of vegetables like long beans, leafy greens, manioc, cluster beans, broad beans, bitter gourd, and peanut. We also raise local cattle and chickens. This integrated system enriches our soil, minimising the need for external fertilisers beyond cow dung manure. To protect our crops from pests and weeds, we employ natural methods like 3G pesticide and neem oil. Despite facing hurdles like elephant damage, infrastructure limitations, and droughts during dry season, we’re determined to overcome these challenges and continue our natural farming journey.

These farming projects don’t just stop here with the harvests they yield. This is just a stone thrown in a pond, and the many extension of this projects that focus on women and child-centric development create a ripple effect in the community. Stay tuned for our next news letter to learn how!
